Classical, pop, qawwali and rock music.
In Indian classical music, the raga and the tala are the two foundational elements. The tradition draws on the seasons and the times of day to create ragas (musical moods) and many time cycles, or taals.
Compositions are fixed, but most of the music is improvised within the structure of notes and rhythm. This gives the music a spontaneous freedom, so every artist and every performance is unique.
Indian classical music is generally passed down orally: the student spends many years with the guru, developing a special, spiritual bond and absorbing all aspects of the music along with the philosophical and moral principles that shape them for life.

Pop music is popular music known for energetic, catchy songs that are easy to remember and sing along to, with a good rhythm and a memorable melody and lyrics.
It is usually played on electronic instruments and is popular with many people because it consists of short songs with a strong beat and simple tunes. Pop music is often simply called “pop”.

Qawwali is a form of Sufi devotional music of South Asia. The word comes from the Arabic qaul, meaning “to speak” or “to say”.
Qawwali is not just another song: it is an experience that begins with an instrumental introduction by the lead singer. The way the singers pronounce words like Ali or Maula seems to reach the depths of the soul.
Sung in Persian, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali, qawwali is traditionally performed at dargahs. Today it is also a regular feature of Bollywood films and international stages.

Rock music, sometimes called “rock and roll”, became popular in the 1950s in America and Europe. It grew out of rhythm and blues, with a heavy focus on guitar, drums and powerful vocals.
Elvis Presley was one of the earliest and most famous rock performers, and in the 1960s the Beatles became one of the most successful rock groups, inspiring performers for decades to come.
