Indian classical dance began in India around 200 BCE. It is a joyful, celebratory art in Indian culture – vibrant and inspiring, and often described as a form of communication with the gods.
It is usually performed at festivals and cultural events. Dancers move their bodies to the rhythm of the music, keeping their movement and coordination in step with the song. The dancer takes on the role of the character in the song and connects emotionally with the story and the audience.
Dancers wear traditional costumes such as sarees, lehengas and kurtas, with jewellery – necklaces, bangles and anklets – and a head ornament, and bright make-up that draws the audience’s attention.
