Indian classical music is a rich tradition that originated in South Asia and is now heard in every corner of the world. Its origins go back to the sacred Vedic scriptures, where chants developed a system of musical notes and rhythmic cycles.
It is closely connected to nature, taking inspiration from the seasons and the times of day to create ragas (musical moods) and taals (time cycles). Compositions are fixed, but most of the music is improvised within the structure of notes and rhythm, so every artist and every performance is unique.
The music is traditionally passed down orally: the student spends many years with the guru, building a special, spiritual bond and absorbing the music along with the philosophical and moral principles that shape them for life.

Raga & taalThe raga and the tala are the two foundations of Indian classical music.
